This lecture will provide in-depth information on hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) including: 

  • Scope and severity of HG for mother and infant
  • Difference between morning sickness and HG
  • Genetic and hormone involvement
  • Pre-pregnancy preparation
  • Recognizing thiamine (B1) deficiency 
  • HG medication dosing, layering, and weaning
  • Antihistamines, acid medication, antiemetic, anti nausea, and bowel care
  • Hydration and IV fluids
  • Educational and patient resources
  • Recovery after HG
  • Emotional impact of HG

Shayna Safran MS is the Founder and Director of Shifrah, the only Jewish English-speaking organization dedicated to supporting women and families facing hyperemesis gravidarum (HG). After her own severe HG pregnancies resulted in preventable complications, she founded Shifrah to educate women and healthcare providers about safe and effective treatment options for HG.

Shayna holds a Master of Science in Sociology from the University of North Texas and worked for over a decade as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She draws on her clinical training to help women and families navigate the medical and psychosocial dimensions of HG with compassionate research-based guidance.
